Por si no lo sabían, Ron Ben Israel es un MAESTRO de pasteles. Yo nada más sueño en ser un 1/8 como él. Robando fotos de él es ridículo. Sus pasteles si distinguen de una forma inconfundible - son casi perfectos.<br />

Desafortunadamente, Ron Ben-Israel no es ni el primero ni el último de víctimas. Aunque este caso se trata de alguien vendiendo las fotos, muchas veces cuando se trata de fotos robadas son otras pastelerías que quieren dar la impresión que ese es su trabajo. Esto pasa tan seguido que hasta hay una página contra estos ladrones en Facebook. <em>Stop the Cake Thief</em>, <a href="http://www.facebook.com/Stop.Cake.Thief">http://www.facebook.com/Stop.Cake.Thief</a>, identifica a los ladrones y sirve como un foro para advertir al público en general también. Consecuencias legales aparte, este tipo de robo está mal en varios diferentes niveles. Es sin morales y promoción falsa.<br />

Aunque no queda duda que esta práctica triste van continuar con algunas personas, si hay algo que se puede hacer. Primero, si ves una foto que sabes que pertenece a alguien más - avísale al dueño original. Ya esa pastelería se comunica con el 'ladrón' para arreglar el asunto. Lo segundo, aunque no lo cree, un ladrón de fotos si se puede identificar fácilmente en el internet. Cuando miran las fotos, buscan por el mismo estilo. Todos los pasteles son diferentes, pero cada pastelería tiene su propio estilo. Fijense en el nivel de talento también. Si algunas fotos se ven casi perfectas y son fotografías profesionales y otros se ven más caseros, la probabilidad es que no hicieron todos esos pasteles. Si está mirando un álbum, pregunta si ellos han hecho todos los pasteles en el álbum. Y no confunden fotos de 'inspiración' con fotos de trabajo. A lo personal, no estoy de acuerdo en poner fotos de inspiración en un sitio. Es muy fácil confunden a clientes en hacer eso. Para ayudar al cliente con inspiración, yo uso una colección de libros, incluyendo <em>Martha Stewart Wedding Cakes</em> y <em>Confetti Cakes</em>. <br />

Al final de cuentas el robo de fotos no solo perjudica a los dos negocios involucrados, pero aun más al cliente. El cliente espera un cierto nivel de calidad basado en las fotos presentadas como trabajos anteriores. Cuando se robran las fotos, ¿cómo van a replicar un trabajo si no lo hicieron en el primer luego? Miran este caso de falsa promoción en <em>Cake Wrecks</em>, <a href="http://cakewrecks.blogspot.com/2008/12/wedding-wrecks.html">http://cakewrecks.blogspot.com/2008/12/wedding-wrecks.html</a>. Las novias de estas bodas de seguro se confiaron que las pastelerías podían hacer el trabajo basado en las fotos que les demostraron. Tristemente, lo que pidieron y lo que recibieron eran dos cosas muy distintas. <br />

Tal vez se pregunta si hay más razón de la del caso de Ron Ben-Israel por la cual decide escribir este nuevo blog. La realidad, no. Gracias a Dios, yo no ha sido víctima de roba de mis fotos (de lo que sepa), pero muchas de mis amigos de otras pastelerías si han sido víctimas. Claro, una resolución a este problema podrá ser no poner fotos en nuestros sitios, pero eso no es realístico. Nosotros clientes, nuevos y viejos, buscan nuestros fotos. Pero si podemos darles saber a nuestros clientes que ese problema existe para que nos pueden ayudar combatirlo. <br />

In case you are wondering, Ron Ben-Israel is a MASTER of wedding cakes. I only dream of being 1/8 as good as him. Stealing cake photos from him is ridiculous. Legal ramifications aside, his work is nearly perfect, which may explain the inexcusable behavior of stealing his photos and selling them. <br />

Unfortunately, Ron Ben-Israel is not the first victim of cake photos theft - far from it. While in this recent case, his photos were trying to be sold for profit, many times cake photo thieves are fellow bakeries trying to pass off someone else's work as their own. Cake photo theft happens so often there is even a Facebook page, <a href="http://www.facebook.com/Stop.Cake.Thief">http://www.facebook.com/Stop.Cake.Thief</a>, outing thieves. Again, legal ramifications side, this type of theft is wrong on so many levels. It's unethical and false advertising to say the least. <br />
<br />
There is no doubt that this sad practice will continue, but there is something you can do. First, if you see a cake that looks strangely familiar and know it belongs to another bakery, let the original bakery know. The original bakery will then proceed in contacting the thief and asking them to remove the stolen photos. Second, cake thieves can be easy to spot online. Look for inconsistencies in decorating style. Sure, every cake is different, but a decorator's style will also show though. Also look for the skill level. If some cakes look nearly perfect and professionally photographed, while other are amateurish on a kitchen counter, chances are the decorator did not do those cakes. If you are looking a print ad or catalog, be sure to ask directly if all the cakes in the photos are theirs. Some decorators have 'inspiration' books, but don't distinguish between the two. <br />
<br />
Photo thieves are not only a headache for bakeries, but customers as well. If a bakery is not honest in their skill level, the customer is the one that suffers. Luckily, I have not been a victim of photo theft, but many of my cake friends across the country have been. We can't really stop posting photos in our online catalogs, but we can let our customers know this problem exists. <br />

Also far from their minds it summer time quinceañeras. Sure, thoughts of being MTV's next "Quiero Mis Quince" superstar are forever in the thoughts of young ladies on the brink of celebrating their quinceañera, but have they taken a break from sledding to think of their summertime fun? In many cases the answer is no. <br />
<br />
As many know, planning a quinceañera can be the equivalent of planning a wedding. It's a once in a lifetime event. And let's face it, the money being spent is no drop in the bucket. While most families have padrinos, it doesn't mean the family should, or will, get off penniless. The best way to make sure families don't end up selling kidneys on the black market to pay for the quinceañera is smart planning. <br />
<br />
Smart planning - what a new concept, right? Well, quite honestly for some it is. You'd be surprised at the number of people calling me for a cake for 300 people less than a month before the quinceañera. Once I had someone call me, wait for it, TWO DAYS before the quinceañera. Sadly, I saw her at a wholesale club the next day in the bakery department. All signs of poor planning. Smart planning doesn't just mean going the cheapest route, it means making the smartest decision. For example, some dresses can take up to six months to order. This means that if your quinceañera is in June and you haven't ordered it yet, you may have to settle for something less than was initially envisioned. It would also mean more money. Ever heard of a rush charge? Yup, they exist and they are high. <br />
<br />
Smart planning will not only save you money, to a certain extend of course, it will also alleviate major headache and stress. No one wants to wiggle into their dress while lamenting whether or not all the damas and chambelanes know the choreography they rehearsed for the first time two days prior. <br />
<br />
While planning a quinceañera for 150 people or 500 people is no direct path, the concept is the same. <br />
<ol><li><strong>Get you priorities straight </strong>Is it critical that you have the ceremony at a particular parish? Book it now. The the devastating dismay of all those girls out there who thing they have the only quinceañera of the year, I have news for you - you are not. Others will plan and BOOK vendors without your consultation. Sorry to break your heart.</li>
<li><strong>Start early </strong>Again, sorry to break your heart, but others will plan and book without any consideration for you. The earlier you start, the more time you have to research what you want and what you can afford. </li>
<li><strong>Shop around</strong> Remember, just because one vendor is financially cheaper doesn't mean they are automatically the one to chose. Pick a vendor that offers you what you want. What's the point of picking the cheapest DJ if all he plays is country and all you listen to is hip-hop?</li>
<li><strong>Be honest, you don't have $100,000 to spend</strong> If you do, don't listen to me and listen to that high priced party planner you hired. For the rest of you, the notion of have an individual cake for every table, stretch limos, a mariachi, DJ and live band, are great, but they come with a price. A big price. Oh, but you have padrinos? Well, that makes it okay then, right? Yeah, not so much. Any money being spent or time being occupied, is someone's hard-working time and money. Don't take advantage of that or be greedy. </li>
<li><strong>Don't lose sight of what a quinceañera really means. </strong>The puffy dress, a day of feeling like a superstar model, having the 'one' guy ask you to dance. You'll be hard pressed to find a girl that has not thought of these things. Yet, the quinceañera is centered around this girl becoming a young lady. It's about her parents celebrating their daughter and saying, "This is our daughter. Our young lady." Honor that. Honor and respect what this moment truly means. </li>
</ol>Does your head hurt just to think of everything entailed? It's okay. It happens to the best of people. The key is not to sweat the little things. Do and accept what can be done. Vanilla or red velvet? Don't lie, that's what's really keeping you up at night.There's this ongoing joke on one of my favorites cake forums that says, "You know you're a cake decorator if....". People have answered everything from "photographing wallpaper at a friend's house because you think it'll make a great design on a cake" to "sat in church thinking, hmm, I wonder how I can replica the stained-glass windows". Yes, we cake decorators are in interesting breed. We breath and sleep cake. (I'd say eat too, but I really can't eat a customer's cake - that would just be wrong.) And while our families may tease us, our customers praise us. I mean it's not everyday our customers order their daughter's quinceañera cake or even their own wedding cake, and when it comes to narrowing down the details that's when our cake love comes into play. <br />
<br />
Every cake decorator has a different consultation process. And every bride magazine will give brides a different list of questions she 'must' ask a baker. (I don't totally agree with them, but that's another post for another day.) Honestly, these lists are hit and miss. (Again, another topic another day.) Let me take you through my consulting process. First I'll nail down the logistics with you (servings needed, reception location, dates, times, etc..). Next we'll talk about what ideas you may already have. This is our starting point. Using the ideas you already have in mind, I'll design something around that. <br />
<br />
If you don't have an idea, I'll ask about the colors you plan on using and details on any flowers or centerpieces. This will help me determine what kind of atmosphere the event will have. Then we'll look at the basic structure of the cake. Do you like it stacked? Do you want a fountain? Traditional or modern? Once we determine what you like best, the custom design starts. <br />
<br />
Now comes the fun part! While I finalize the design details and cake sizes needed, you'll taste the delicious samples. This is probably the part grooms and dads like best. Who can blame them? At this point, you'll select up to 3 cake flavors for your cake. <br />
<br />
To finish off the appointment, we review the details so I can mail you your contract within the next few weeks. <br />

I had the opportunity to have COMPLETE creative control over this cake! As exciting as it sounds, it was hard! I was very conflicted as to whether to follow my instincts and go for a Star Wars inspired cake, or go for the pretty feature. As you can tell, pretty won out. I finally decide on this style cake for the simple fact that I have always loved this style, but haven't had the opportunity to do one for a client yet. <br />

In this case, the cake served a dual purpose. It was part of a photoshot for the Bishop Sullivan Center's newsletter, and ultimately a birthday cake for their front receptionist. Bishop Sullivan Center is sponsoring the business classes I am taking, and wanted to feature me as a student of the class in their newsletter. It was quite exciting, to be honest. <br />

The Contreras family decided to look outside the box for their recent quinceañera and opted for a cupcake tower. Yes, they have been around for a few years now, but only until now are they making a debut at quinceañeras. And what better place to make their presence known, than at a coming-of-age celebration? <br />
<br />
I truly cannot explain how much fun I had doing this cake. What made it even better was the reaction I got. The Contreras family loved it! They even moved it from it's original corner location to a more prominent place near the entrance. The guests all loved it. That is truly the best part of it all. Being able to bring that joy into someone's life with something as simple as a cake. <br />
<br />
Day two of business class was last night, and am I in for an exciting ride. Our coach let us know right off the bat this is not a cruiser course. She is going to make us work hard. It's a bit intimidating, but it's what I want and need. I want to create edible works of art. I want my customers to know that they will be getting more than just a cake - they will be getting a centerpiece all their guests will take about. In order to have all of that though, I need this course and training. I have 11 weeks of class ahead of me, and I am not going to lie - I'm nervous. I don't know what to fully expect or what outcome will come of it. Ha! I should know the cake business had plans of its own. After a 200-cupcake tree, doll cake, tennis shoes cake, heart cake and a two-tiered birthday cake, I was beat! I had to cancel. Luckily, my friend understood and took a raincheck. <br />

On one of my favorite cake forums, established business owners will always warn us newbies that starting a business is like starting a new life. There is so much to learn and do in order to have a successful business. Most of the hardest work is done before one even opens the door. I'm talking of competitive research, researching marketing strategies, researching your target audience, establishing your business' identity, etc... The list literally can go on for days. As hard and overwhelming as it is, these 'to-dos' are necessities. <br />
<br />
So where am I in the process? I am in the middle of it all. I've already put my foot through the door. Whether I was invited or not, I love the party and I'm won't be going anywhere for a while. Is it tiresome? Do I sometimes wish I can rid myself of the party clothes and just veg-out on the couch? Absolutely. But as any girl will tell you, we will suffer for the sake of fashion. I will suffer for the sake of having a successful business. My family knows this. My friends know this. And now you know it.<br />
<br />
As of next week, I will start a business course specifically designed for small/marco business owners. This is a huge step in further developing and expanding my business ideas. (Yes, I said ideas.) It's nerve-wrecking, but worth it. Six years my mind was deadset on being a reporter. I envisioned myself working for <em>The Kansas City Star </em>or a local television news station. Running a custom bakery was definitely not in the plans. But as we all know things happens and plans change. And quite honestly, I could not be any happier. <br />

These past few weeks have been CRAZY and AWESOME! Not only have we been able to put together some great school and church events, we've helped support other local businesses and artists in the process. While this is also a bit of a 'downtime' in terms of cake orders, it does not mean I've rested! On the contrary! I've met with a new customers for their 2010 weddings and quinceañera and equally exciting, I'm developing new products. These new products are going to be great for when the store opens. <br />
<br />
I don't think anyone in the process of opening or developing their new business fully knows what to expect. On one of my favorite cake forums, the question of "how to start a business" comes up all the time. I always want to scream - say good-bye to weekends, Friday nights, family and so much more. And really this can go for any business. I know I'll pretty much have to give up my weekends (not that I don't already). But on the plus side, I am SUPER excited to expand the business! <em>Jose Fiestas Rental </em>customers will know get to know <em>Kreaciones Kity </em>and vice versa. It's actually a pretty simple concept. All you need is the right tools. I started out with a PVC structure Bronwen and Francois provided us. They gave us tips on how to create our own for future uses. It's funny to see the progression of "Ranchero Chido". As we put away our flip-flops and tank tops we pull out our boots and hoodies. I, for one, am excited for the new fall season. The smell of cool, crisp air while walking in the beauty of nature is an inspiring thing for me. Thankfully, this new inspiration has also led to some new ideas.<br /><br />As you've noticed, this is a new blog address. I decided to make the switch after I realized that all the blogs I follow are hosted by Blogger. Why I didn't make the switch sooner is beyond me. I am still in the process of moving over past entries to this new blog. Hopefully, I'll figure it out soon so it won't take too long. In the meantime, please just hold tight. I know this move will overall result in a better, more convenient and accessible site.<br /><br />As far as other new ideas, they are more like plans in progress. I've talked all summer about the new venture Jose Fiestas Rental and yes, it is still in the works. It's just taking a bit longer than we had anticipated. It's a step in a new, better direction that will ultimately allow us to better serve all of our customers. Just like you, we too, have become very impatient, but trust me it will be worth the wait!<br /><br />And while it may seem that I am skipping over fall, I've already started to make plans for the new year. The more I use fondant, the more I love it. It’s an absolute great medium to be able to use. It allows for a more smooth finish and in some cases a more realistic depiction of a particular item. However, this doesn’t mean I love using it more than I do whipped frosting. As a matter of fact, frosting a cake in whipped icing is one of my favorite things. I can give a 14” round a smooth coat in about 7 minutes – start to finish. But each icing serves its purpose – a different purpose. </p> <p> </p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0pt">Look at the cakes below. Rachel’s “Ashtray cake” would have never come out so realistic if it had been done in the whipped icing. Likewise, if they had been done in fondant, Gaby’s “Baptism Wings” wouldn’t look like they are indeed about to fly away. </p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0pt"> </p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0pt"><img width="500" height="375" src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2630/3875591368_1497270747.jpg" border="0" /></p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0pt"> </p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0pt"><img width="500" height="375" src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2486/3875591446_aeca7cb897.jpg" border="0" /></p><p> </p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0pt">In the case of the pink ashtray, it called for a very specific smooth look. The black and white sanding sugar used to form the ‘ashes’ could have soaked into the whipped icing, and once removed the fondant cigarettes would have also left their mark. Neither one of these things happened with the fondant-covered cake. </p> <p> </p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0pt">The whipped icing gives the wings an airy and soft look. They truly look like wings. Had the wings been done in fondant, it wouldn’t have been able to give that same airy and soft look. Also it would have been very heavy. The weight of layers and layers of fondant would have definitely added additional weight to the cake. </p> <p> </p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0pt">Now, even though each icing serves it’s own purpose and produce very different results, it doesn’t mean that they can’t be combined. Val’s and Mike’s “Ball & Chain” is the perfect example of combining the best of both worlds. The ball is covered in fondant and the chain is made of a gumpaste/fondant mixture. Placed atop whipped-covered cakes with flames, the ball and chain look great. The whipped flames give the cake a certain texture and feel. The cake as a whole highlights the best of each icing’s purpose. </p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0pt"> </p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0pt"><img width="375" height="500" src="http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2256/3875591492_92c0f4d04c.jpg" border="0" /></p><p> </p><p class="MsoNormal" style="margin: 0pt">The use of fondant, whipped or buttercream, icing can make a difference in the design of a cake. I have good reason though. I've been busy in the kitchen - baking! I'm even going to have to cut it short today. I'm only posting two photos today - Emilio's boxing gloves and Ruben's "21" cake. I did an awesome Tinkerbell cake on July 4, but of course, I forgot to take a pic. I was very bummed about that. I LOVED how it came out!</p><p>Other tidbits before I get to the photos. Jose Fiestas Rental is moving right along - A GREAT JOB!! I can't wait for all of you to see the final product! You are not going to want to leave the shop. Second, don't forget to book your XV or wedding cake with plenty of notification! Same goes for your regular orders. I need at least 48 hours notice for my minimum order. I can't guarantee anything after that. Finally, I'm planning my yearly vacation. Along with some last minute orders (that I was able to fit in) I had my 4th of July cake, some church cupcakes and my nephew's birthday cake. But the most exciting news happened earlier last week. I can't go much into detail, but let's just say that some BIG news is going to be coming from Jose Fiestas Rental and Kreaciones Kity. It's all very exciting! I know you are going to love it! </p><p>I didn't have my camera with me, so no pictures of the two cakes or cupcakes. The cupcakes looked delicious! The mom picked a simple white on white design w/silver dragees. With a simple switch of a decorating tip, it really gives the cake a different look. I like it. I've never been a big fan of the section on other sites, but came to fufill the "if you can't beat 'em, join 'em" theory. I caved. Then I realized, I should share more about myself and what I believe. I'm a strong believer in supporting causes and businesses that you believe in and the only way people are going to believe in <em>Kreaciones Kity </em>is knowing more about me. </p><p>I'm not going to rehash the "About Cristina" section - I'll let you read it for yourself. One thing I don't mention in it is my education. I have a B.A. in Communication and Spanish with a minor in Journalism from Rockhurst University (Go Hawks!). Quite a different step from owning a custom bakery, huh? The passion is the same, though. The ability to visually create something that is going to inform or bring a happiness to someone is a great feeling. Taking a step back to read a finished article or an edible piece of artistry gives me a level of joy and satisfaction like no other. </p><p>But so how did I leap from writing B2B articles on agriculture to making cakes? Simple - corporate layoffs. After leaving the agriculture magazine, I took a much needed break to do some soul-searching and figuring out what I wanted my next step to be. I knew I needed to pursue a more creative outlet. Come into play my longtime love of cooking and baking - and ta-dah! <em>Kreaciones Kity </em>is born. </p><p>What lies ahead only God knows. I thank Him everyday for what He has given me in this life. He has given me more than I asked for or could have ever imagined. I only hope I am making Him proud. And while only He knows what lies ahead, I am taking the gifts He gave me and making some goals. When I think of what I want to achieve I'm unable to contain the excitement. If I'm able to achieve all my dreams - DUDE, IT'LL BE FREAKIN' AWESOME!!!! </p><p>So, there, now you know a little more about me and where I come from. Maybe this will make you more inclined to support <em>Kreaciones Kity. </em>Maybe I just talked about myself for a really long time. I've got another big cake weekend coming up. </p><p>I'm about to hit the grocery store to do the shopping and picking up other materials. I'm really excited about the two big cakes of the week - they've got an awesome classic design to them!</p><p>Then I have my nephew's b-day and Father's Day - gifts and cakes to worry about! It's all good though. </p><p>But DUDE, some awesome news - Jose Fiestas Rental's shop is coming along nicely!!!! It's so great. They'll be located on 9th street in KCMO and it'll pretty much be your one-stop party shop. You'll be able to pick up your tables, chairs, moonwalks, tablecloths, food chafer and other rentals there as well as other party supplies. We're talking ballons, plastic tablecloths, candles - everything! And the awesome thing - I'll in their in-house baker! Yup! You'll get to pick up your custom cakes and cupcakes and even pick up some last minute pastries. Definitely a VERY exciting thing. Sheet cakes DO NOT have to be your typical rose and shell border cakes. If that's what you like, than I'm more than happy to do so, but in my experience, most guys aren't big fans of roses. So this is why it's good to mix it up a bit. </p><p>Now I know this b-day cake has a shell border, but it's still diffferent! I'm lovin the car! It was perfect! I had just got the mold (remember the cool cake stuff I got? - this is one of the things :), so it was awesome to use it. The other awesome thing about it - it's 100% edible - pure white chocolate! Mmmm.....</p><p><img style="WIDTH: 347px; HEIGHT: 465px" border="0" src="http://c3.ac-images.myspacecdn.com/images02/100/l_cff19502afd948f2a644d1928f03383a.jpg" width="480" height="640" /></p><p>Next up - a wedding and groom's cake. The groom LOVED his Raiders cake - it was a complete surprise! Surprises are always great. I love the simplicity of the cake. I think the combination was GREAT! Plus - I love the look of a hexagon cake. So a big congrats to Cyla and Abraham! Much love and I wish you guys the best! (OMG - Cyla looked so pretty! They can be different, but still give you the ease a sheet cake has to offer. </span><br /><span class="968330815-08062009"></span><br /><span class="968330815-08062009">I'll admit they aren't always my favorite - usually because they are harder to make creative! It's a good challenge to have though. Which I think is one of the reasons I really like this graduation cake. It's simple, but effective. I guess that can be said for any cake though. So my camera was messin' up (see XV pic). Well, it was a manufacturer defect. They are gonna fix it FREE! Sweet! I love Canon - great product and after nearly five years they still stand behind it!</p><p>Other awesome thing of the day - picked up some new cake stuff. Nothing too special, but at a great price.
